Halloween, Etc.

A busy October wrapped up with Halloween (of course) and a few other Halloween-related events.  For the first time in several years we didn't go to our usual pumpkin festival, but Luke's class took a field trip to a nearby farm for a fun day of games, rides and activities.  Both kids had lots of Halloween fun, but especially Luke as this was the first year that he was really excited for Halloween and trick or treating.  Enjoy the photos!

Camping October 2013

Our annual 3-family group camping trip last month was one of the best ever!  The weather during the four-day, three-night outing was nearly perfect (although a little cold the first night - 39 degrees!).  But even better, it was Luke's first camping trip (successfully) sleeping in the tent!  If you'd like to remember Luke's previous camping trips:

This year our whole family slept in the tent together (like a camping trip should be)!  Leading up to this trip, Luke was so excited. He got his very own sleeping bag and headlamp just like the big kids.  He had such a great time and he LOVED sleeping in the tent.  In fact, not only did he sleep great in the tent all night, but he took great naps every day too!

As usual, Maddie had four straight days of non-stop fun with her girlfriends.  With all of the girls getting older now, they really enjoyed their "freedom" to wander away from the campsite on their own (but not too far) to play in the creek, visit the campground cats at the campsite clubhouse or play on the playground.  Luke played some with the girls, some with Mom, some with his big-boy friend Jack, and mostly with Dad.  As soon as we got home, Luke was already asking when we could go camping again.  Since Luke did so well and had so much fun, we're considering a spring camp trip early next year!

Luke's First Day at Preschool

A couple of weeks ago Luke reached another major milestone when he started preschool! He had visited the school several times previously - once on a tour of the school with Mom and again later to enroll - and each time he seemed excited and ready for that transition. We were cautiously optimistic that he wouldn't be the screaming kid hanging onto his mother's leg, but we didn't know exactly how he would do.

Well he did GREAT! Like a big boy he kissed Mom goodbye and sat down on a carpet square alongside his preschool classmates. Two and half hours later Mom returned to pick him up and he was all smiles. Mom was greeted with a big hug and was beaming with pride after the teacher quietly pulled her aside and said that Luke was the best listener and a really good boy.

Now twice a week he enthusiastically goes to school and always has lots to talk about at the dinner table on school days. He really likes his teacher and our refrigerator displays new school work every week. He'll soon start after school "sports ball" activities which introduces sports activities (he really loved a trial class he participated in last week). Mom misses her little boy for those few hours, but she does appreciate a little "free time" to do grocery shopping, laundry, errands, doctor appointments, etc.  And she really loves those pickups when she gets a big hug and a kiss from a happy preschool boy!

Backpacks are full and we're ready to go!

California Vacation 2013

We always eagerly anticipate our summer vacations and this year's trip to California was no exception. We waited a bit later in the summer for this trip, going in early July (we usually go in early June) and celebrating Luke's 3rd birthday as part of our trip! (See Luke's 3rd birthday for photos of his other birthday party at home with friends). As always, we had a fantastic week with lots of fun and great memories. We have so many great photos from this year's trip... enjoy the sampling of the best ones below.

Of course the beach is one of the highlights of our summer vacations in California.  This year more than previous years, Luke really enjoyed the beach.  Whether it was making sand castles (and knocking them down!), splashing in the waves, or just running around - the beach provided endless opportunities for fun.

We visited Sea World (and the Sea World water park) for 3 days.  At Sea World Luke spent most of his time in Sesame Street "kiddie" land area.  His favorite ride was Elmo's Flying Fish and he loved crawling though the tunnels and running on the bridges on the elevated playground.  Maddie's favorite things were the animal shows and exhibits.  It so fun to see how excited the kids get for these special days.

Luke was obsessed with this photo booth... much time was spent in the booth "taking pictures"

When not having fun at the beach or Sea World, there was plenty of fun to keep us busy at the condo... swimming pools, playing games or just relaxing.

Cooling off in the condo pool...okay it wasn't hot enough cool off, but the pool was still fun

3.. 2.. 1.. Blast Off!

Some relaxation time sharing some popcorn and playing iPad
And of course since were on vacation for Luke's actual birthday, we had a second birthday celebration for him (a surprise) at the condo.  Luke was so cute (and grateful) for this... when we walked into the condo and he saw the balloons, decorations and his presents, he said "Family, thank you for all of these presents!"

On our last day of vacation we found an awesome park only a short drive from our condo. Dad and Luke went to the park in the morning and spent several hours playing. Later that same day after dinner, we spent our last evening in California playing in this beautiful park.
